The school has the capacity to accommodate a maximum of 250 children in the main school and 25 children in the Branch school at Ramalinga Nagar. Based on the turn-over of children every year and availability of vacancies, admission is conducted for inducting new students every year. The following procedure is adopted for admission of children in the school. Every year applications are issued in the month of March and April at the school. The filled-in applications are to be submitted on or before the end of April to the Principal. The Birth Certificate and Medical Reports are to be enclosed with the application. Children in the age group of 5 to 20 years are eligible to apply.
They will be placed suitably in the Academics or Vocational Training Sections depending on their age and IQ levels. During the month of May, a call letter is sent to the applicants and the selection is conducted. The Selection Committee normally consists of an inter-disciplinary comittee of members such as Pediatricians, Child Psychiatrists, Physiotherapists, General Physicians, Principal/Vice Principal of the school and Trust Members.
The fitness of the children especially medical is tested during the selection interview. Children with mild, moderate and severe retardation are selected, where there is scope for training and improving the condition of the children. Children below the age of 3 yrs are admitted to the early intervention programme while those aged 15 and above, are eligible for admission to the vocational training programme.
Academic Skills & Activities
It is very difficult to achieve total homogeneity in the grouping of children with retardation. Individualised Programme Planning (IPP) is followed for imparting skills and teaching process is tailor made to suit each student. However Special Education Center grouping is done based on the ability, MDPS and chronological age into different levels.
Depending on the student's program, development of different faculties and skills is taken up in a progressive manner.
1. Sensory perception
2. Motor coordination
3. Speech control
4. Language development
7. Self help
8. Understanding of time and money concepts
9. Vocational activities
10. Traveling to the place of work
Assessment and Evaluation:
A behavioural assessment should provide descriptive information about the functional abilities of an individual by 'assessing' his/her adaptive behaviour for an appropriate individualized program planning accurate and comprehensive information of the individual is essential. in order to get an accurate information on the individual, a systematic assessment with a standard assessment tool is necessary. we are following the Madras Development Programming System (MDPS) behavioural scale for assessment. The overall purposes of assessment is to make sure that the individuals needs are understood and provides the appropriate initial steps to programming and for future evaluations.
Persons who are Mentally Challenged are a Heterogeneous group. Success in training such persons can only be achieved by adopting methods particular to the needs of each person who vary considerably from each other. The programme plan evolved for each person should be according to his individual needs and characteristics. An individualised Program Plan (IPP) is developed to provide a comprehensive service for the persons with mental retardation and specifically to meet the educational and training needs of each person.
1. To reassess the learner on the checklist
2. To consolidate the data from the implementation records.
3. To compute qualitative report of the observations.
At present, Arivalayam is following the behavioral scale of MDPS, and in due course behavioral scale issued under FACP (Functional Assessment Checklist for Programming) issued by NIMH (National Institute of Mentally Handicapped) will be implemented.
